MEDICAL FIELD: Wound Management
LOCATION: Västra Frölunda, Sweden
During the clinical immersion phase of our fellowship project we have met several patients who were homebound for long periods of time (9 -11 months) because of diabetic foot ulcers. Non healing diabetic ulcers cause patients not only physical pain, but also have a severe impact on their mental state leading to depressions. More than 50% of diabetic foot ulcers become infected. 20% of diabetic foot infections result in amputation. Another consequence of the diabetic foot ulcer is a rapid muscle loss as the patients are usually chair bound for a longer periods of time preventing them from normal physical activity. All the patients require significant amount of care for prolonged periods.
We are building a medical device that would speed up healing process of foot ulcers in home settings providing support and guidance to the patient (thus reducing amount of care needed) and at the same time provide feedback on the treatment and adherence data to the healthcare staff.
